Sensationalist HIV Threat!!!!!!!!! 03/15/2009
So, this week, I got on the bus to work, and picked up a copy of the Toronto Metro to read. I found an interesting article about a tattoo studio in Mississauga (the city next to Toronto) that had recently been inspected by Peel Public Health. The article I read is here. CommentsIsn't it funny (and sad) that people will believe anything you tell them if you sound like you know what you're talking about? So many people don't even bother to check and research things people tell them or try to verify the source.

Being married to a tattoo artist and shamelessly plugging his work has definitely opened up a lot of conversation with people about their views on tattoos. Safety and hygiene are reasonable, valid concerns. Concerns of mine as well! I encourage them to ask questions and never go in to something like a tattoo blindly. I tell them about disposable stuff vs. sterilized, about how to take care of their tattoo properly to avoid infection. I tell them about some of the stats you have mentioned in this blog. All the while I see them breathe a sigh of relief. All their stereotypes revolving around tattoos, parlours and tattooed people begin to fade, and empty fears are calmed.

Heyy, I was simply searching around for info on statisics about tattoos for a class I'm in, and I was really surprised when I read this. I found it pretty amazing how it seems dentistry seems to be at more risk for HIV and Hepatitis. I know that if you keep the right sanitary condtions, things like that don't happen, but to hear that tattoo shops can maybe be safer, then a dentist office, surprises me. I must say, I'd like these laws you have in Toronto to come to Nova Scotia though, because we don't have any thing to regulate proper working conditons for N.S. and that can be a troublesome thought.
